Exploring Samsung CJG5 Monitor with Gaming Industry Expert Paulo J. Gomes from Deep Silver

On August 21, Samsung Electronics unveiled its new CJG5 curved gaming monitor at Gamescom 2018 in Cologne, Germany. Offering strong benefits for casual and serious gamers alike, the CJG5 monitor is also well-equipped for the general user.

As more and more people explore the myriad fantasy worlds of role-playing games, or the rapid-fire action of first-person shooters, there is increasing demand for a computer monitor that brings even greater value to gamers.

In order to explore the monitor’s features in more detail, the Newsroom caught up with Paulo J. Gomes, Director and Producer of Bigmoon Studios from Deep Silver. Gomes gave his expert, hands-on opinion of the monitor while playing Deep Silver’s DAKAR 18.

Swift Reactions

The faster the refresh rate, the more fluid the motions on the screen, creating smooth images free from blurred movements. This lowers latency on cursor movements and scene transitions, improving the speed and efficiency of your work and play. With rapid refresh rates of 144Hz – significantly over and above the standard monitor refresh rate of 60Hz – the CJG5 was designed to deliver a more realistic in-game experience without interruption.

“The impeccable visuals augment the gaming experience, not only for DAKAR 18, but also for wide range of genres,” explained Gomes. “In DAKAR 18, you can drive from fast racing zones to slow driving environments. The CJG5 increases the experience by provide exceptionally responsive graphics and ensuring players do not experience picture lag or interruption with a 144Hz frame rate.”

Response times also prove key to reducing a player’s overall reaction speeds and, at 4 milliseconds(GTG), the CJG5’s response times give players a competitive edge. This means that the monitor is well-suited to playing high res games, as it reduces eye strain and produces no afterglow.

Resolution Redefined

It is an era when visual media continues to push for even more content in high definition. The growing Wide Quad HD (WQHD) market is responding to these demands with higher resolutions, providing crisp detail and pin-sharp images.

With a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440, the CJG5 monitor has a real estate approximately 1.7 times larger than a Full HD device. The WQHD device lets you see more of what you want on the screen, reducing the need to zoom or scroll as you navigate documents and webpages.

“I could tell a difference throughout the entire game,” said Gomes “With four times higher resolution compared to the standard HD monitors, the CJG5 showcases precise, life-like images. It’s extremely important for DAKAR 18 since we replicate the real lands of Peru, Bolivia and Argentina.”

Better picture quality also improves the gaming experience, as the display gives players a wider field of view so that they can see and react quicker.

For Gomes, this has a significant impact: “The VA curved panel and three-sided bezel-less design, combined with the highest resolution, creates an immersive gaming experience. The CJG5 benefits users who swiftly move their focus while playing games. With DAKAR 18, you need to shift focus a lot to identify where you are and avoid getting lost.”

Comfortable Viewing

Those who spend a significant portion of the day looking at a screen may experience eye strain due to intensive use. The CJG5’s 1800R curvature can help to improve comfort levels when looking at the screen for a long stretch of time, reducing eye fatigue and strain.

“In addition to the effects of the curved screen, Samsung’s Eye Saver Mode reduces fatigue-inducing blue light emissions and the monitor’s Flicker Free feature suppresses screen flicker, allowing less strain on your eyes,” Gomes remarked.

The curved display can also provide a more immersive experience for gamers, heightening the sense of realism.

Optimized for Gamers

The monitor is also packed with features which quickly optimize settings for particular viewing experiences. The CJG5’s game display mode instantly adjusts black gamma levels, contrast ratios, sharpness and color value settings for any game genre including FPS(First Person Shooting), RTS(Real Time Strategy), RPG(Role Playing Game), and AOS(Aeon Of Strife) – while the cinema mode does the same for movies.

The monitor is equipped with a Game UI, which offers an OSD dashboard menu for an instant overview of key settings.

“I particularly appreciated the image enhancement setting on the OSD dashboard to really enjoy the graphics throughout the game,” Gomes shared.

Striking Contrast

A high contrast ratio can be a game-changer, adding a new dimension to the images displayed on the screen. Players can spot objects and movements in dark arenas or landscapes more easily.

Samsung’s VA panel technology offers an industry-leading 3,000:1 contrast ratio, which creates deeper blacks, brighter white and richer colors. This depth and vibrancy enhance gameplay, adding to the sense of immersion.

“When playing a game like DAKAR 18, you must have the most clear, vibrant images available to experience the greatness of the game,” explained Gomes. “Without a high contrast ratio, the graphics can fall flat and the game is not as interesting.”

Equipped with a rapid refresh rate and response time, WQHD picture quality, comfortable screen curvature, optimized gaming features and a best-in-class contrast ratio, the CJG5 monitor provides gamers with real value.

Offering his final words on the monitor, Gomes said: “This is next step in gaming monitors and has definitely redefined what gamers should expect. This monitor, in my opinion, would be great for any game with realistic environment graphics like DAKAR 18. The high resolution and refresh rate on this monitor work together harmoniously, meaning gamers remain fully engaged and immersed for longer.”

The Ultimate Screen for Multitasking: Samsung CJ89 – 49 Inch Supersize Monitor Review

More and more people are choosing a multiple monitor system to increase productivity. However, this type of setup doesn’t come without disadvantages. These include differences in height and color between the monitors, and bezels that sever the continuity of screen information. Not to mention the longer system setting times and complex array of connections.

This year, Samsung Electronics introduced the CJ89, a 49-inch curved monitor. Its screen size equals to two 27-inch monitors, providing an optimized and better workspace than a multiple monitor system. Samsung introduced a gaming monitor of the same-size, the CHG90 last year, but the CJ89 has more powerful and optimal functions for business environments, such as a built-in KVM switch, USB-Type C ports, and built-in stereo speakers.

Here, Samsung Newsroom reviews the CJ89, the super ultra-widescreen monitor that guarantees both the best work and the best leisure experiences.

Effortless Viewing Experience with 32:9 Super Ultra-Widescreen

The diagonal length of the 32:9, 49-inch curved screen is a whopping 124cm! The first thing we thought was, “Can we see everything on screen without turning our heads?” But our doubts vanished quickly once we sat in front of it. The usual procedure with dual monitors is to turn one’s head to and fro. With the CJ89, however, we could see everything effortlessly.

The secret is the 1,800R curvature of the display, which is equal to a curvature radius of 1,800mm. The monitor is curved to match the natural shape of the human eye, so the viewing experience is more comfortable with less eye strain.

The CJ89’s wide screen was very convenient to view a complex set of data at the same time. The standard ratio for office monitors is 16:9, which shows about 26 columns in Excel program. But the CJ89 showed about 52 columns, so we did not have to keep scrolling the screen left and right. Also, we could arrange two or three full-sized windows on the same screen, so we did not have to keep shifting between windows either.

It seemed the monitor could provide a way more convenient work environment, not only for graphics work that compares and edits multiple images or videos, but also for general office work that requires web searching while writing documents or analyzing various data points at the same time.

Conveniently Use Many Devices with One Monitor

The monitor images in the above graphic have been manipulated to demonstrate the screen transition feature. No brightness changes occur during actual device usage

The CJ89 has a built-in KVM switch, allowing easy maneuvering of a neat feature called ‘Picture-In-Picture (PIP) mode,’ which enables users to display multiple applications on the big screen, and  ‘Picture-By-Picture (PBP) mode’ which transforms one monitor into dual monitors.

You can select the device to be displayed on the divided screen and adjust it with one button

When connecting the CJ89 to a desktop computer, a laptop or a Dex station, it becomes more than just a big screen. Especially when we connected a smartphone to the CJ89 using a Dex Station, the UI optimized for the desktop environment made us feel like we were using a PC.

According to the user’s diverse needs, the CJ89 can be divided into two 16:9 screens, or a 21:9 and 11:9 screens. With Samsung’s Easy Setting Box software, we could choose from a variety of layouts when viewing multiple Internet windows and documents. Arranging multiple windows automatically was a breeze, as it can be done with a single click.

The CJ89 has USB Type-C ports, which is more convenient to use than its predecessors. A USB Type-C connector simultaneously delivers electric power, data, and display signal between devices. For example, a Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 can be connected to a CJ89 via the Type-C port to mirror their displays on the CJ89 and charge the battery at the same time. And a laptop, a tablet, and a desktop can also be connected via the Type-C port without an extra connection hub, and they can be displayed seamlessly on the CJ89.

More Immersive Gaming Experience

The CJ89 not only provides a better business environment, but also a better gaming experience. Gamers can enjoy an immersive experience with the monitor’s crisp 3,840×1,080 high resolution and ultra-wide screen. We played Project CARS and Need for Speed on the CJ89. On the ultra-widescreen, the racing games felt way more “realistic and exciting” than any other monitor.

The CJ89 provides 144 Hz refresh rate, which is well-suited for gaming purposes. A refresh rate means how many frames a monitor can display in a second. The higher the refresh rate, the smoother the movement of the objects on the screen. The refresh rate of most monitors is 60 Hz, meaning they show 60 frames in a second. On the other hand, the CJ89 shows 144 frames in a second, so the movement of the characters and the change between the scenes were buttery smooth.

It supports 144Hz refresh rate on both windows of the screen, which makes it ideal for enjoying games with friends and family, or playing games while also watching a gaming video on YouTube or reading tips on an online forum.

In particular, the CJ89 has built-in speakers. You can enjoy a profound sound for gaming or watching videos with its 7-watt dual speakers, without having to fork out extra.

The 43-inch CJ89 monitor will be also available in the second half of this year*. If you want to excel in both work and leisure, the CJ89’s capabilities will help you to become a true multiplayer.

All You Need to Know to Start Your Gaming Journey

With dramatic adventures and fantastical universes abound, entering the world of gaming is like traveling to a parallel dimension where anything is possible. There are more people than ever playing games, willing to spend valuable time and money on gaming to fulfill their need for virtual adventures.

But for the uninitiated, getting the right gaming setup can be daunting, especially when there are countless hardware combinations available. Fear not, help is on the way. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide on all you need to know about gaming hardware.

From first-person shooters (FPSs), which place players squarely in the heart of battle, to massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), which immerse you in sprawling settings with millions of other gamers, there’s truly something for everyone in the gaming world.

Perhaps you’re interested in embarking on an epic quest in a role-playing game (RPG), or utilizing your analytical prowess to outsmart your opponents in a real-time strategy game. Or maybe you’d prefer to chase championship glory in a sports title, risk it all to be the last person standing in a battle royale, or invite your friends to play the virtual version of a classic board game.

All you need to do to get started is pick a title that interests you, install it on your computer, and you’re ready to begin your gaming adventure.

Here’s an all-too-common scenario: You’re eager to start your first mission, having familiarized yourself with the controls, but the game is taking too long to load.

If you’re playing on a desktop, an easy way to shorten load times is to upgrade to a solid-state drive (SSD). You may be able to do the same for your laptop, depending on its design.

‘Load fast, Play fast’, Samsung 860 PRO | EVO SSDs

Unlike hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs do not feature moving mechanical parts, which means that they can load, store and read data three to four times faster. Samsung’s SSDs, the 860 EVO and 860 PRO, offer up to 530 MB/s and 560 MB/s read and write speeds, respectively. Featuring a five-year warranty, they’re reliable partners for all your gaming needs.

Installation is easy thanks to Samsung’s Data Migration program, which allows you to seamlessly transfer important data to your new computer drive. Simply connect the SSD to your computer via SATA USB cable, run the migration program, and your data will be automatically transferred to your new SSD.

Your upgraded SSD will allow you to enjoy an in-game edge. You’ll be able to load your game faster than other players, which will make it easier to, for instance, ready your forces for battle in an MMORPG.

Samsung’s 860 PRO | EVO SSDs, personified by the Victo robots pictured above, are ready to supercharge your gaming experience.

If you’d like to enjoy your games anytime and anywhere, a gaming notebook (or laptop) could be just what you need. Gaming notebooks are high-performance PCs that support brilliant graphics and fast response speeds.

Samsung designed the Notebook Odyssey Z to take the gaming experience to new levels. The company’s latest gaming notebook comes equipped with an 8th generation Intel Core i7 hexacore processor, as well as the NVIDIA Pascal™ architecture-based GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card. The device also supports the latest DDR4 memory with a bandwidth of 2,400 MHz, which allows games to operate at lightning quick speeds.

These components allow the Notebook Odyssey Z to foster an ideal gaming experience. And if that’s not enough, the notebook also features convenient shortcut keys – to initiate screen captures, activate silent mode, and more – along with a Beast Mode function, which instantly boosts performance by 17 percent.

To help ensure that games run as smoothly as possible, the notebook features Samsung’s innovative Z AeroFlow Cooling System, which consists of three lightweight components: the Dynamic Spread Vapor Chamber, the Z AeroFlow Cooling Design, and dual Z Blade Blowers. Together, this powerful trio of technologies ensures that the notebook remains cool and powerful even when handling the most demanding of games. By directing cold air to the warmest parts of the device and expelling warm air through the vents, the system creates a pleasant, heat-free environment that’s perfect for extended gaming sessions.

Practice makes perfect. But at a certain point, you’ll find that your gaming skills are improving at a slower pace. That’s when having gaming-specific accessories can help take your experience to the next level.

By simply adding a gaming mouse and keyboard to your setup, you’ll notice an immediate difference in your reaction speed and accuracy.

When shopping for a gaming mouse, pay attention to the dots-per-inch (DPI) number. The higher the figure, the more sensitive the mouse is. Trying different mouse and keyboard combinations is also essential to finding a pair that clicks with you.

With sound design becoming increasingly sophisticated, it’s important for players to hear even minor audio details during gameplay. Extra layers of sound from additional speakers will improve your sense of anticipation and allow you to prepare for attacks from all directions.

Being able to quickly spot hidden items and accurately distinguish different characters are crucial skills in the gaming world. However, details needed for identification may not show up clearly on a laptop with a small screen.

Samsung’s latest high-resolution gaming monitor, the super ultra-wide (32:9) CHG90, can alleviate this frustration. The 49-inch monitor’s 144Hz refresh rate allows it to deliver smooth and captivating visuals, even for games with high-spec graphics. The device also boasts a 1800R curvature, and features Quantum dot and HDR technology to foster lifelike, vibrant images that make gamers feel like they’re in the heart of the action.

The CHG90’s Black Equalizer function enhances visibility in dark areas of the screen, making it easier to spot your enemies wherever they hide.

To further amplify gamers’ immersion, the CHG90 offers an 1ms (MPRT) response time, which minimizes the effects of motion blur, as well as an innovative Black Equalizer feature, which enhances visibility in dark areas of the screen to make it easier for gamers to spot items and lurking enemies.

Not so long ago, accessing the world of virtual reality required traveling to one of the few locations that possessed the requisite technology. Today, however, the excitement of mixed reality (MR) can be enjoyed from the comfort of your home.

Designed in partnership with Microsoft, Samsung’s HMD Odyssey headset allows gamers to experience new levels of immersion through mixed reality.

Equipped with dual 3.5-inch AMOLED displays, the HMD Odyssey utilizes mixed reality to bring an unparalleled level of immersion to video games. The headset’s 1,600 x 1,440 resolution and 130-nit brightness ensure that even a game’s finest details are crystal clear. Its built-in AKG headphones, meanwhile, support 360° spatial sound, transforming games into multi-sensory experiences.

By replacing the keyboard and mouse with ergonomic motion controllers, the headset offers gamers limitless freedom to traverse virtual terrains. The motion sensors are built into the headset, which makes installing the HMD Odyssey as easy as plugging a memory stick into your computer.

Support for the wide range of VR-enabled apps and games available in the Microsoft Store, as well as the over 4,000* titles in the Steam VR catalog, makes the HMD Odyssey the ultimate platform for modern-day gaming.

Congratulations, you have successfully completed all the levels in this guide! It’s time to start your first virtual adventure, where things will get a little trickier.
