Samsung and Disney Reveal Zootopia-Themed AR Emojis

Messaging is much more fun with Samsung’s AR Emojis—augmented-reality avatars that mimic users’ expressions, transforming you via the camera app and offering a unique and creative way to inject personality into your messages.

Since the feature’s introduction with the Galaxy S9, Samsung Electronics and Disney have teamed up to bring a number of Disney characters to life as downloadable AR Emojis. Now, the addition of three beloved characters from Disney’s hit movie Zootopia has made messaging on Galaxy devices even more magical.

Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde and Flash join the ever-growing roster of animated Disney characters that are currently available for users to download, including Mickey Mouse and friends as well as characters from The Incredibles and Frozen.

To download the new characters, simply access the camera’s AR Emoji mode, tap the plus icon on the right-hand side, and select the Zootopia AR Emoji pack from the Galaxy Apps store.

Once downloaded, you’ll be able to easily create and share the animated emojis as images, videos or gifs in your favorite messaging app*. And if you simply can’t get enough of their cuteness, you can also apply an AR Emoji of Judy, Nick, Flash, or any of the other characters listed above as a GIF and pin it on your device’s Always On Display, or apply it as a video on your lock screen’s wallpaper**.

Head over to the Galaxy Apps store to download Samsung and Disney’s latest AR Emoji characters.

*Apps that do not support animated GIFs may still send AR Emoji stickers as a still image.

**Function supports videos up to 15 seconds in length.

4 Tips to Get the Most Out of the Galaxy Note9’s Powerful S Pen

The Galaxy Note9 was designed to offer users the levels of power and performance they need to get the most out of work, play and everything in between. Perhaps no feature embodies this all-encompassing approach to productivity more than the Galaxy Note series’ signature stylus: the S Pen.

Over the years, Samsung has enhanced the smartphones’ trademark tool with innovations that have transformed the way users manage their mobile lives. Here, we’ll show you how to utilize the S Pen’s new Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) connectivity and other convenient enhancements to enjoy a more fun (and efficient) mobile experience.

Tip #1: Customize Clicks for the S Pen’s Remote Control Function

Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > S Pen remote

New BLE technology transforms the S Pen into a handy remote control that allows Galaxy Note9 users to manage a wide variety of functions and apps from within 10 meters of their device.

Users can customize clicks of the S Pen’s button to perform specific actions within specific apps. Single clicks and double clicks can designate different actions, while holding down the pen button can be assigned to opening other apps and the S Pen features. This means that you can open the camera by holding down the S Pen’s button, click once to take a picture and twice to switch cameras, without the need to touch the smartphone’s screen at all.

The S Pen’s single and double press functions are compatible with more than 10 apps and is expected to expand to further apps thanks to the S Pen’s open SDK. You can pick and choose which remote control functions you’d like to enable by accessing the S Pen’s settings.

Tip #2: Flex Your Creative Muscles with Photo Drawing and Live Drawing

Photo Drawing: PENUP > Drawing > Set background image

Good news for those of us who’d like to fine-tune our artistic skills: the Galaxy Note9’s new Photo Drawing and Live Drawing features offer simple tools to add an effortless creative flourish to your images.

Both feature integration with PENUP—a social network for creative types to share S Pen-created artwork. Photo Drawing allows you to use the S Pen to draw over images as you would with a sheet of tracing paper. Once you’re finished, you can delete the original photo or drawing and save your new creation as a separate image.

Live Drawing: PENUP > Live drawings

Live Drawing, meanwhile, allows you to see for yourself how seasoned S Pen artists create impressive works of art. The feature’s wide selection of step-by-step tutorials offer simple instructions for drawing everything from everyday objects to cute characters and scenic landscapes. The videos make it easy to see exactly which colors and brushes the artists used, and you can also trace over the featured objects, scenes and characters to practice drawing them.

Tip #3: Make Your Emojis More Meaningful

Keyboard/Air Command > Live message

Introduced in the Galaxy Note8, Live message allows users to easily send handwritten notes, make animated GIFs, and create the perfect emoticon to capture the emotion they wish to express. The feature was recently enriched for the Galaxy Note9, with three new pen effects bringing the total number to six effects, and various pen colors to choose from. Live message can also be added to users’ AR Emoji Stickers, bringing an even more personal touch to their messages.

Introduced with the Galaxy S9, Samsung’s augmented reality-based emoji feature utilizes machine learning and facial recognition technology to create a 3D model that matches your appearance and facial expressions. From a simple selfie, the function automatically generates a total of 36 sharable stickers that feature your unique AR Emoji expressing a wide range of emotions.

The combination of AR Emojis and Live message creates a unique way to make your messages more personal, and makes messaging friends and family that much more fun.

Tip #4: Take Advantage of User-favorite S Pen Functions

In addition to introducing an array of brand-new functions and innovations, the Galaxy Note9’s S Pen includes the great collection of fan-favorite features that have enabled Galaxy Note users around the world to experience new levels of convenience in their daily lives.

Screen off memo has been a user-favorite feature ever since it was first introduced with the Galaxy Note5. The function gives you the freedom to jot down notes or ideas whenever you need by writing directly on your device’s off screen. The memo can be pinned to AOD (Always On Display) and automatically saved in Samsung Notes.

The Galaxy Note9 has made Screen off memos more dynamic by adding color to the mix. Now, when users compose a note, the S Pen’s markings match the color of the S Pen itself—either yellow, light gray, lavender purple or metallic copper. Users who prefer Screen off memo’s classic gray pen can easily select this option in the function’s settings.

Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > Air command

The S Pen’s Air command menu offers users instant access to some of its most convenient functions. The menu can be customized with up to ten of your most frequently used functions with S Pen and shortcuts. Such S Pen functions include Smart select, which allows users to select, clip and collect content in one quick move with the S Pen in a desired shape, and the Translate function which lets users highlight and translate text on the screen, without the need to navigate away to another app. The Air command menu can be accessed simple by taking out the S Pen or by hovering S Pen over the screen then clicking the S Pen’s button.

Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > Air view

Air view is another convenient function that offers instant insight into your phone’s content, simply by hovering the S Pen over the device. With Air view, you can see a short preview of your schedule in the Calendar app, text of webpages, and enlarged thumbnails of your pictures saved in the Gallery.

With innovative features designed to enhance your work and play, the S Pen for the Galaxy Note9 has redefined the mobile lifestyle, as the connected stylus brings even greater convenience and fun to both work and play.

Samsung and Google Collaborate on RCS Messaging for Android

Samsung Electronics and Google announced they are working together to offer an enhanced smartphone messaging experience, accelerating the industry initiative toward global Rich Communication Services (RCS) coverage and interoperability. This collaboration will ensure that Android Messages and Samsung Messages will work seamlessly together and with RCS messaging, enabling features like the ability to chat over WiFi, create rich group chats, see typing indicators and read receipts, and share high-resolution photos and videos across platforms.

Working together, Google and Samsung will ensure that their messaging clients, Android Messages and Samsung Messages, work seamlessly with each company’s RCS technology, including cloud and business messaging platforms. To date, Google and Samsung have collaborated to introduce RCS to select Samsung devices; as part of this expanded collaboration, Samsung will work to bring these RCS features to existing mobile phones* beginning with the Galaxy S8 and S8+. New Samsung Galaxy smartphones will also natively support RCS messaging**, starting with those on a set of carriers that have or will soon launch RCS. This means that consumers and brands will be able to enjoy richer chats with both Android Messages and Samsung Messages users.

“At Samsung, we adhere to a model of open collaboration to bring premium experiences to our customers across products,” said Patrick Chomet, EVP and Head of Product & Services Innovation Team, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “By furthering our robust partnership with Google, we will bring a richer messaging experience to our customers, letting them seamlessly chat with their friends and family across messaging platforms. This collaboration will help further the industry’s momentum toward advanced messaging and global RCS coverage.”

“We’ve been working with the mobile industry to upgrade the messaging experience on Android with RCS,” said Anil Sabharwal, Vice President for Communications Products and Photos at Google. “Samsung has been a major contributor to this initiative, and our partnership will further advance our shared vision of a substantially improved messaging experience on Android for users, brands and the broader Android ecosystem.”

As a further benefit of this expanded partnership, developers and brands that create RCS Business Messaging experiences (based on GSMA Universal Profile 2.0) using the Google or Samsung Messaging-as-a-Platform (MaaP) services will be able to reach both Android Messages and Samsung Messages users, bringing richer business messaging to many more users.

This collaboration further accelerates the adoption and availability of RCS globally, enabling an enhanced messaging experience across the entire Android ecosystem.

*Will include Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, S8 Active, S9, S9+, Note8, Note9, and select A and J series running Android 9.0 or later. Subject to carrier and market availability.

**RCS capabilities will be available for select Galaxy smartphones on carriers that support RCS.

Bringing Galaxy Note9’s Scene Optimizer to Life

Designed to transform everyday moments into memorable tales, Galaxy Note9’s Scene Optimizer takes Samsung’s best-in-class smartphone camera to the next level. Even if you haven’t a clue what saturation or white balance means, no one would know by the stunning pictures this feature helps you produce. But how did Samsung bring this feature to life? Read on to find out more.

01. The Problem

Ask any professional photographer and they will tell you how difficult it is to excel at all genres of photography. Whether it’s portraits, landscape photography, or food shots, they all require different techniques and camera settings for the best results. But when shooting with smartphones, most people don’t have time (or simply don’t know how) to adjust technical details, such as saturation, brightness, and white balance.

02. The Goal

When designing the Galaxy Note9, we aimed to create a camera that produces pictures even professional photographers would be satisfied with. To ensure stunning images with every shot, we also wanted to make the feature as easy to use as shooting with Auto Mode.

03. The Idea

Since photographers always look at what they are shooting first before deciding on settings and equipment, Galaxy Note9’s camera needed the ability to distinguish different subject matters automatically for our idea to work. It was also important for us to build settings that appeal to everyone.

04. The Solution

To turn our vision into reality, we developed an algorithm which sorts and categorizes complex scenery and objects. By passing the image on the preview screen through multiple filters, each specialized in analyzing different shapes and tones, the algorithm can determine what the camera is looking at. In addition to processing the object in focus, it also analyzes characteristics of the background scenery to allow the entire image to be enhanced accordingly.

To understand how users judge photographs, we conducted surveys to find the most popular color and tone combinations for different types of images. We also fine-tuned the settings based on users’ feedback on photos taken by past Galaxy phones.

05. The Result

The result is Galaxy Note9’s Scene Optimizer. By analyzing the main objects, scenery and time elements of a photo, the smart feature can categorize the image into 20 different types including food, flowers, animals, landscapes, and more1. When the photo is taken, Scene Optimizer automatically selects the appropriate color and tone settings to boost the overall quality. No matter their skills or experience, users can always rely on the Galaxy Note9 to make their photos pop.

A Game-changer: How Samsung Optimized the Galaxy Note9 for Next-level Gaming

The Galaxy Note9 holds absolutely nothing back when it comes to speed, power and performance because today’s users need a smartphone that allows them to get the most out of work and play. That’s why Samsung Electronics packed its latest flagship device with innovations in software and hardware that not only take mobile productivity to the next level, but mobile gaming as well.

In games where timing and accuracy are everything, the slightest changes in performance, such as unstable FPS (frames per second) rates, can mean the difference between life and death. Mobile gamers want to ensure that their device is equipped with hardware and software they can rely on.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the innovative technologies that make gaming on the Galaxy Note9 so much fun.

Smooth, Stable Performance

Many of today’s most popular mobile games place players in vast open worlds that can be wonderfully immersive, and incredibly taxing on a phone’s processor. When you’re in the midst of an epic battle or ever so close to setting a new high score, there are few things more frustrating than when an overworked processor causes a sudden drop in frame rate that leads you to lose focus or fall prey to an enemy attack.

Because a phone’s CPU and GPU performance can make or break your gaming experience, Samsung optimized the Galaxy Note9 with a cutting-edge 10-nanometer processor that handles graphics-intensive games with ease. This allows the device to provide 33 and 23 percent better CPU and GPU performance than the Galaxy Note8, helping gamers stay engaged and in the zone.

The Galaxy Note9 also features an on-device AI-based performance-adjusting algorithm that regularly monitors the device’s heat and performance, supporting up to 40 percent more stable FPS when gaming. Thanks to machine-learning technology, the device can predict a change in temperature before it occurs and adjust the CPU and GPU, before a drop in FPS occurs. That means smoother visuals and a more enjoyable experience when playing graphics-intensive games like Fortnite.

Cool Under Pressure

Playing graphics-intensive games for extended periods of time can place a great deal of strain on a phone’s CPU and GPU. To help the Galaxy Note9 perform consistently at a maximum level throughout gaming, the new cooling system needed to be faster and more efficient than previous generations.

The Galaxy Note9’s specially designed Water Carbon Cooling system allows the device to run cool throughout heavy gaming sessions. The system, which was first introduced in the Galaxy S7, utilizes changes in the phases of water to efficiently radiate heat – in a cycle where water in a porous structure absorbs heat, turns into steam, moves through pipes and eventually cools down turning back into water.

Samsung enhanced the system for the Galaxy Note9 with a heat pipe, or ‘thermal spreader’, that’s three times larger than the Galaxy Note8’s, and dissipates heat more effectively. The company also increased the system’s internal water intake to foster greater heat absorption, and incorporated an enhanced carbon fiber TIM (thermal interface material) that transfers heat from the processor to the thermal spreader with 3.5 times greater efficiency, thus boosting thermal conductivity.

Together, these innovations enable the Galaxy Note9 to run smoothly during extended gaming sessions, creating more opportunities to play the games you love.

Giving Gamers More Control

Distractions like phone call and text message notifications can be the worst when playing games on a smartphone. Game Launcher, a one-stop hub for mobile gaming on Samsung’s Galaxy Devices, is the solution to deal with such problems. Offering a range of innovative tools and features, the Game Launcher allows players to streamline and concentrate fully on their mobile gaming sessions by preventing alerts and unintended screen touch. Users can also share their gameplay using the launcher’s screenshot and video record functions.

Game Launcher has been enhanced even further for the Galaxy Note9 to let users to get more out of gaming sessions. The Galaxy Note9’s improved Game Launcher now allows users to customize performance settings for individual games. Users can specify the frame rate, resolution and battery usage level for each game in their collection, fostering a gaming experience optimized for enjoyment. In addition, a pop-up window function has been added to the launcher, allowing players to effortlessly launch certain apps – like looking for winning tips and tricks on YouTube or sharing game information online – during gameplay.

Game Launcher on the Galaxy Note9 brings games such as Fortnite, Black Desert and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds to even more fans*. Galaxy users are also offered special discounts and in-game bonus items, such as an exclusive Galaxy Skin for Fortnite**.

Galaxy Note9 Lands in India

On August 22, Samsung Electronics hosted a launch event for the Galaxy Note9 in Gurgaon, New Delhi, India. Highlighting Samsung’s entrance into the Indian premium market, around 800 participants including local partners, media and Indian Galaxy fans joined the event.

At the launch event, distinguished users of the Samsung Members app – where Samsung users share tips and receive access to special rewards, exclusive events, such as Unpacked itself, and discounts – were invited as special guests. Some of the most active users were named ‘ambassadors’ and received the Galaxy Note9 as a recognition of their brand loyalty. Other participants also received presents, as well as their pre-ordered phones, and everyone was able to get a hands-on experience of the Galaxy Note9.

The Galaxy Note9 will officially launch on August 24 in three different color options: Ocean Blue, Midnight Black, and Metallic Copper. The smartphone also implements the S Pen and 128GB·512GB built-in memory.

Deep Commitment to Indian Consumers

In order to provide products and services that are specialized for India, Samsung Electronics operates five R&D centers, one design center and two production sites in the country, along with a sales-focused corporate body.

In July, the size of the Noida production site was increased to a total of 250,000 square meters, to expand smartphone production up to 120 million devices annually through the end of 2020. The expansion is in response to rapidly growing demand in the Indian smartphone market and an increase in Indian exports.

In addition, Samsung Electronics continues to develop various functions and services reflecting the needs of Indian consumers. The ‘Chat on Video’ service enables users to chat with others through a translucent chat window while watching YouTube videos. ‘Samsung Mall’ will help search for a product that you are looking when you take a picture of a similar product, and ‘S-Bike Mode’ manages calls for you while you are riding your bike so you are not disturbed.

Samsung and India’s constructive cooperation has proven fruitful since the company first entered the market in 1995. The launch of Galaxy Note9 will be another momentum to drive continued co-growth for the two partners.

[Infographic] Samsung Mobile Innovation: Pushing Boundaries Towards a Productivity Revolution

Sometimes bigger is better. Samsung proved that in 2011, when they changed the smartphone market with the launch of the Galaxy Note, popularizing phablets and starting a legacy of premium products designed to help high-achievers do bigger things. From modernizing the smartphone stylus to creative innovations in the way we text like Live Message, Samsung sets the bar for what a high-end smartphone should be. Let’s take a look at where the phablet craze began.

[Design Story] Designing a Galaxy Watch that Matches Every Lifestyle

The Galaxy Watch represents the meeting of connectivity, wellness and design. Individuality, innovation, and refinement towards perfection were all key steps in its progression. At the center of this process were the endless contemplation and fierce passion of the smart watch’s design team.

To learn more about the story behind the wearable, the Newsroom team sat down with the designers of the Galaxy Watch – Tommy Choi, Hyemin Bae, Jaehyung Hong and Sanhui Oh – as they introduced the new addition to the Galaxy family of devices.

Designers of the Galaxy Watch – Tommy Choi, Hyemin Bae, Jaehyung Hong and Sanhui Oh

Q. The Galaxy Watch showcases a wide array of new options, with two different sizes and various colors available. How did you approach designing the new Galaxy Watch?

A. The newest Galaxy Watch’s design focused on millennials, a generation that prioritizes stylishness and loves being active without bounds. Our answer to the needs of this generation was an outer design that covers a wide range of styles – from classical moods with elegance to casual moods with a dose of freedom. We also made sure to preserve the legacy of the real watch philosophy that we have held over the years to instill the watch with a complete identity.

The design embodies the spirit of activeness, inspired by the remarkably sporty racing watch. The index design with the inverted triangle is one of the results of this design. The tip of the index triangle is designed to precisely align with the hands of the watch so that users can accurately tell time even in active and dynamic conditions.

Q. What kinds of changes were made to its outer design?

A. Whereas the previous model featured a more masculine identity with its weighty body and bold thickness, the Galaxy Watch puts focus on micro details to create a more sensitive design. This design has a tight-knit and low-cut knurling finish of the bezel to minimize malfunctions and create a natural style suitable for women as well.

Low-cut knurling finish of the bezel

Q. How does the strap accentuate the Galaxy Watch’s design?

A. We tried to capture not only the style of the Galaxy Watch, but also the various preferences of our users with the strap. The silicon strap features a new stripe pattern design that wraps around your wrist to express a sense of speediness and activity.

Furthermore, each product comes with straps in multiple colors, which users can mix and match with the body to give a unique makeover of the Galaxy Watch’s mood.

Q. Could you elaborate further on the multiple color combinations available?

A. The 46mm Silver’s Onyx Black, Deep Ocean Blue, and Basalt Gray straps bring an exquisite finish to the product’s charm. The 42mm Midnight Black comes with Onyx Black, Lunar Gray, Terracotta Red, Lime Yellow, and Cosmo Purple straps, and the 42mm Rose Gold can be paired with Pink Beige, Cloud Gray, and Natural Brown straps for users to blend different colors and express distinctive moods for every occasion.

These colorful Galaxy Watch straps can be matched with the Galaxy Note9’s case as well, so users can stylize their smartphone and smart watch with a singular visual identity.

42mm midnight black model’s straps(20mm), from left, lunar gray, tera-cotta red, onyx black, yellow and violet

42mm rose gold model’s straps(20mm), from left, natural brown, pink beige and cloud gray

Q. How did you take concerns such as battery life into consideration?

A. The Galaxy Watch isn’t a device you can easily and regularly charge as you would with a smartphone, so there has always been a consumer need for a longer battery life. That’s why we put a lot of effort into the battery every time we released a new product in the series. With a 10nm (nanometer) chipset, the Galaxy Watch’s processor is smaller and consumes less power than previous models – but it is also more powerful than ever before. The Galaxy Watch 46mm model, for example, can achieve 80+ hours of battery life with typical usage1.

Q. Were there any other changes to the hardware?

A. The Galaxy Watch’s hardware has gone through a comprehensive transformation. The most noticeable part is the sensor located on the back of the product. We increased the number of rear sensors that touch the body to more precisely and quickly detect information regarding user conditions. On the other hand, we decreased the surface area of the sensor that touches the skin and designed it to protrude slightly to better detect user conditions, while eliminating inconveniences such as the accumulation of humidity.

A Smart Guide to Using the Galaxy Watch

The Galaxy Watch goes beyond the previous capabilities of wearables and explores new functions for its users. To optimize your experience, check out these suggestions from a designer on how to make the most of the Galaxy Watch’s intuitive UX.

Pick 1. A Smart Way to Manage Time with the Galaxy Watch

The Galaxy Watch doesn’t just tell you the time, it helps you plan and efficiently use your time as well.

  • My Day Watch: Your schedule for the day can be displayed based on the pertaining times on the watchface.
  • Daily Briefing: Every morning, you can be briefed on weather and health information. At night, a summarized report of your health throughout the day and reminders for uncompleted tasks will help you efficiently manage time, with just your Galaxy Watch alone. The device pairs with the Galaxy Series so that you can easily check schedules you saved on your phone through the Galaxy Watch.
  • Dual Time Watch: A function useful for travelers and global business professionals, this helps users check times from different time zones all at once on the watchface. When the watch detects that a user’s time zone has changed, it preemptively suggests the Dual Time Watch.

Pick 2. Quickly Shift Modes to Wholly Focus on Your Needs

The Galaxy Watch allows users to quickly shift through different modes to accommodate different situations, which helps users wholly focus on the moment.

  • Theater Mode: The smart watch screen is always brightly lit, which can cause inconvenience for users depending on the situation they are in. The Theater Mode prevents all elements of interruption, such as light or alarms, when users are in a theater.
  • Goodnight Mode: Whether you’re sleeping or simply want to get some uninterrupted rest, the Goodnight Mode will make sure you’re not bothered by any alarms other than the ones you’ve set yourself.

Pick 3. A Personally Customized Way to Care for Your Health

The Galaxy Watch will detect a user’s physical condition and help maintain a healthy day-to-day life.

  • Stress Tracker: This tracker will check your stress levels and help manage it through stress-relieving breathing exercises. When using the consecutive tracking settings, you can see the real-time trends of your stress level.
  • Sleep Tracker: Your sleep patterns are tracked automatically and analyzed into four different stages to help you organize and manage your sleep cycle better.
  • Various Workouts: The Galaxy Watch’s fitness function now features 39 total exercises, which is a powerful upgrade from the previous selection of only 18 exercises. You can choose and edit an exercise and gradually build up your own exercise report.
  • Back-to-back Workout: Once an exercise is over, you can designate the next exercise through a questionnaire, so that your workout routine carries on without pausing. Even if you do multiple exercises, your records will be tracked through the multiple workout report, which can help you maintain a well-organized workout routine all on your own.

In the evolution of the wearable device, the Galaxy Watch now encompasses the smart lifestyle. The Galaxy Watch is the perfect complement to Millennials, never ceasing to take on the new challenges of the unknown.

1 Typical Usage: Galaxy Watch 46mm up to 80+ hours; Galaxy Watch 42mm up to 48+ hours. Battery life with typical usage using combined actions including notifications (55 times), checking time (56 times), checking text messages (25 times), talk time (13 minutes), music streaming (15 minutes), workouts (30 minutes), basic controls (30 minutes) and sleep mode

Samsung Canada has introduced an exciting collaboration project – documentary films shot entirely on smartphone devices. Samsung reached out to six unique content creators for this effort: filmmakers Nimisha Mukerji, Charles Officer and Yung Chang, as well as YouTube creators Sabrina Cruz, Corey Vidal and Emile Roy.

The documentary project was intended to show how easy it is to tell a story using Samsung’s innovative features. Filmmakers Nimisha Mukerji, Charles Officer, Yung Chang and YouTuber Emile Roy used the Galaxy Note 8 devices, while YouTube creators Sabrina Cruz and Corey Vidal used the Galaxy S9+ to depict their unique styles to tell their stories.

The six-part documentary series was screened at the Hot Docs Festival, the largest documentary festival in North America, which was held in Toronto from April 26 to May 6 this year. Each director brought a different perspective to the human experience with their work. The Little Trumpet Boy by Charles Officer introduced 17-year old William Leathers, a boy with perfect pitch and synaesthesia. Award-winning film and television director Nimisha Mukerji shot a personal documentary chronicling her pregnancy, while Sabrina Cruz, best known for her YouTube channel NerdyandQuirky, created a piece titled Sourtoe Cocktail about her quest to the Yukon to get a taste of the world famous “Sourtoe Cocktail,” seasoned with an amputated toe that has been dehydrated and preserved in salt. Yung Chang created Home Movie, featuring a memorable movie for his daughter, and Corey Vidal’s video titled Remembering takes a very personal trip down memory lane using his Galaxy S9+. All of these documentaries can be seen online for free on the Samsung Canada YouTube channel.

Among the documentaries, The Little Trumpet Boy and Home Movie touched the heart of a representative from EBS, an educational television and radio network in Korea. As a result, the two documentaries are scheduled to be screened at the upcoming 18th EBS International Documentary Festival (EIDF) that will be held from August 20 to 26 in Goyang, Korea.

Samsung Pay Now Available in Six Continents, Accelerating Global Expansion

Samsung Electronics today celebrated the third anniversary of its mobile payment platform, Samsung Pay. Originally launched in South Korea on August 20, 2015, Samsung Pay has experienced significant global growth and is now available in six continents1 and 24 markets2, including the latest market, South Africa. Thanks to the support and partnership of thousands of banks and countless network, merchant and service providers across the globe, Samsung recently passed more than 1.3 billion transactions globally.

“Since we launched Samsung Pay three years ago, we have been dedicated to delivering a mobile wallet platform that is simple, secure and works almost anywhere. We have been expanding its availability and forming strategic partnerships in each market to meet the unique needs of their users,” said DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics. “And we’re not limiting ourselves to a mobile wallet – by integrating with our other mobile services, consumers will be able to earn Samsung Rewards points, use Bixby for a more seamless payment experience and more.”

The growth of Samsung Pay highlights the company’s localized and open approach to mobile payments. With approximately 2,000 banking and financial partners globally, Samsung Pay offers value-added services based on local market needs, including3:

  • Online payments, now available in 15 markets, including Australia, Brazil, Switzerland and Taiwan
  • Transit cards in 5 markets, including China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and the U.K.
  • Loyalty and membership cards in 20 markets, including Canada, France, Mexico and Sweden
  • ATM transactions in 5 markets including Russia, South Korea, UAE, U.S. and Vietnam
  • Samsung Rewards, offering points to purchase merchant partner vouchers and Samsung products and services, available in 10 markets, including India, Malaysia, Spain and the U.S.
  • Pay Planner, helping users spend more wisely by tracking their transaction history and analysing their consumption pattern in South Korea and the UAE
  • Bixby integration, allowing users to make purchases at popular merchants with one simple request.

Samsung takes a localized approach for every launch, ensuring that the partnerships, value-added services and capabilities of Samsung Pay are customized for each market to provide the optimum mobile wallet service. Samsung also works with existing payment services so that when the service is introduced in the market, it’s seamlessly integrated into the payment infrastructure. For example, in Hong Kong, Samsung exclusively partnered with the Octopus Card Limited to bring NFC-enabled Octopus payments to the market’s diverse transit and retail establishments, offering customers a fast and simple payment experience. Samsung’s partnership network extends with support from retail and corporate leaders, including Ticket®, one of the largest benefits card providers for organizations in Brazil, and El Corte Inglés department store in Spain. By taking a localized approach to partnerships like these, millions of users benefit from having a centralized and secure payments platform across multiple card types, and exclusive rewards such as product vouchers, instant rebates and extra loyalty points.

Samsung’s model of open collaboration extends into the broader payments industry through partnerships with major financial institutions, including Alipay (China), WeChat Pay (China), BHIM UPI (India), PAYCO (South Korea), Chase Pay (U.S.), PayPal (U.S.), and NAPAS (Vietnam). By partnering with these financial leaders, Samsung Pay provides consumers with a more functional mobile payment platform. Additionally, with PayPal, users can now pay offline, and soon online via Samsung Pay. Other partnerships, such as those with Chase Pay (U.S.) and PAYCO (South Korea) use Samsung’s MST technology, giving customers even greater flexibility in how they make payments.

[Video] Feast Your Ears on the Galaxy Note9’s S Pen-Inspired Alerts

Each new addition to the Note family introduces enhancements that make the smartphones’ iconic design even more distinctive. Recently, these refinements have resulted in the series developing a signature sound inspired by the smartphones’ inimitable S Pen.

Last year, Samsung’s audio UX team collaborated with a group of talented musicians to craft an exclusive set of S Pen-inspired ring- and notification tones for the Galaxy Note8. For the Galaxy Note9, the company asked Andrew Huang, a versatile and prolific musician, video producer and YouTube star, to compose a brand-new set of creative songs and sounds using ordinary pens and paper.

The Toronto-based artist was more than up to the challenge of crafting unique sounds with unconventional instruments. As any of his 1.4 million (and counting) YouTube subscribers will tell you, Huang has a reputation for working musical magic, and is particularly well known for his ability to produce dynamic beats using everyday objects.

The three ringtones and two notifications that Huang produced feature beats that incorporate a variety of pen and paper-created sounds, including light taps, tears and the crinkling of paper, accompanied by a keyboard, synths and guitar. Huang even added his ‘signature sound’ to the mix—i.e., he recorded the actual sound of signing his signature. The resulting set of ringtones and notifications is at once soothing, upbeat, and brimming with energy.

Check out the video below to watch Huang introduce the Galaxy Note9’s new sounds and walk us through his creative process.

[Infographic] Samsung DeX Sparks a Productivity Revolution on the Galaxy Tab S4

In a world dominated by spontaneous team meetings and weekend business travel, it is vital for companies to help employees detach from the desk and make it easier to work on the go. As the landscape of remote work is rapidly shifting, and a workforce of 1 billion digital nomads expected in the not-too-distant future, the tools we use to get the job done need to evolve with the times. Samsung has answered that call with the next evolution in mobile productivity: the Galaxy Tab S4, Samsung’s first DeX-compatible tablet.

Check out the story below to see how DeX and the Galaxy Tab S4 are making it easier for tech-savvy professionals to unplug and get more done on the move.

[In-Depth Look #4] Beautiful From Every Angle: The Design of the Galaxy Note9

Samsung approached the Galaxy Note9’s design with equal focus on usability and on empowering users’ expression.

As a result, the latest addition to the Note family is not only easy to use, with its customizable, Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) connected S Pen, it’s also easy on the eyes, with a thoughtfully refined display and frame design. And with a total of four standout color options, which users are encouraged to mix and match with S Pens and accessories of various hues, the Galaxy Note9 offers users more ways to express their fashion and style.

Enhancing an Iconic Design

The Galaxy Note9 furthers the Note series’ stunning design heritage with a sleek and square form factor, as well as enhancements that enable users to multitask more efficiently and enjoy immersive multimedia experiences.

A cornerstone of Samsung’s design legacy, the Infinity Display is known for its seamless form and captivating visuals. Measuring 6.4 inches, the Galaxy Note9’s Quad HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity Display is the series’ largest yet, offering more room for work, play and everything in between. That means a bigger screen to immerse yourself in a favorite movie or game, and more space to write or create with the S Pen.

To amplify users’ immersion, Samsung rounded the corners of the display to a bare minimum, and refined the Galaxy Note9’s barely-there bezels to conceal its iris sensor. The screen itself is also a deeper black, which allows it to blend in with the bezels when the device is off and enhances the overall aesthetic. Other enhancements include the redesigned camera deco, which now matches the color of the device, and the repositioned fingerprint sensor, which is now found beneath the camera.

The smartphone’s design is rounded off with a choice of four expressive color options: Ocean Blue, Midnight Black, Metallic Copper and Lavender Purple.

A Standout S Pen

Each Note adds new capabilities to the smartphones’ signature feature: the S Pen. Over the years, these enhancements have unlocked innovative ways for users to manage their mobile lives more comfortably and freely. When designing the Galaxy Note9, Samsung’s team focused on enhancements that would take the S Pen’s ‘freeing’ aspects to the next level, transforming it into more than a tool, but rather a device in its own right, complete with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity and its own independent functions.

The S Pen’s individuality is also reflected in aesthetic elements of the Galaxy Note9’s design. For example, unlike the other colorways, which each feature an S Pen in a matching hue, the stylish Ocean Blue model comes with a vibrant Yellow S Pen that stands out from the rest. And because each model’s S Pen is compatible with any other Galaxy Note9, you can easily swap your S Pen for another if you feel like a different color would better suit your style*.

The S Pen’s significance to the line is also reflected in the new flagship’s packaging, which prominently displays an image of the S Pen in place of the devices’ traditional logo. This adjustment was made to honor the S Pen as the symbol of the Note series, and a key reason why the smartphones have garnered countless fans.

A Refined Frame

One of the first things you’ll notice when holding the Galaxy Note9 is just how nicely it sits in the hand. The smartphone’s comfortable contours are the result of a frame design that reflects thoughtful consideration for both usability and aesthetics.

The metal frame was forged using a cutting process known as Dia-cutting, which utilizes a fast-rotating artificial diamond tool to create smooth, glossy surfaces that accentuate design details. The process involved tapering the surfaces of the frame that blend into the device’s front and back, and carefully rounding the middle section, which comes into contact with your palm the most. The tapered parts of the frame feature a glossy finish, while the rounded middle section is matte.

The resulting frame is sleek and slim, and features an interplay of glossy and matte finishes that complements the Galaxy Note9’s premium design cues.

  • The video above illustrates the dia-cutting process, followed by the coloring procedure of the Galaxy Note9.

Exceptional Accessories

The Galaxy Note9’s accessories selection includes a wide range of stylish covers that offer users more ways to customize their smartphone’s aesthetic. Designed to suit a wide array of tastes, the protective covers span from fine leather to military-grade options.

The new Leather Wallet Cover is perhaps the most eye-catching of the bunch. Crafted from genuine calf leather, it features a handy card pocket as well as a soft microfiber lining that helps protect the Galaxy Note9 from scratches. It’s available in a choice of five colors—black, brown, red, blue and yellow—which users are encouraged to mix and match with their Galaxy Note9 to showcase their style.

Also included in the Galaxy Note9’s collection of compatible accessories is Samsung’s new Wireless Charger Duo. DisplayMate: Galaxy Note9’s Display Performance Raises the Bar ‘Significantly Higher’

DisplayMate Technologies has completed its comprehensive evaluation of the Galaxy Note9’s Infinity Display, and the results are clear: “The level of display performance and excellence has been increasing each year, and the Galaxy Note9 has raised the bar significantly higher.”

According to the world’s leading evaluator of video screens, the Galaxy Note9 features “the most innovative and high-performance smartphone display that we have ever lab tested.” The smartphone established several display performance records during DisplayMate’s in-depth analysis, ultimately earning the firm’s highest-ever A+ grade.

The Galaxy Note9’s 6.4-inch, 3K (2960×1440) Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display matched or set records for a number of important measurements, including screen reflectance, absolute color accuracy, peak brightness, native color gamut, contrast ratio and screen resolution.

The smartphone’s enhanced High Brightness Mode produces vibrant visuals when users need them, such as when they’re under direct sunlight or in environments with lots of ambient light. DisplayMate’s evaluators tested the feature by displaying an all-white full screen, which is the most challenging image for an OLED display to produce, as it requires all the pixels to shine at full power.

The Galaxy Note9 set a new record for this brightness measurement that was 27 percent brighter than last year’s Galaxy Note8. The device also featured a contrast rating for high ambient light that was 32 percent higher than that of its predecessor.

Each of the Galaxy Note9’s screen modes demonstrated record-setting absolute color accuracy, which is measured in units of Just Noticeable Color Differences, or JNCD. This measurement refers to the bare minimum color difference that the human eye can perceive. The Galaxy Note9’s 0.5 JNCD rating is not only 85 percent better than the Galaxy Note8. According to DisplayMate, the record-setting rating makes the Galaxy Note9’s Infinity Display “the most color accurate display we have ever measured,” and “visually indistinguishable from perfect.”

In addition to featuring enhanced brightness and accuracy, the Galaxy Note9’s display offers improved power efficiency. DisplayMate’s evaluation also included a measurement of the display’s average power consumption when portraying a wide range of content. The Galaxy Note9 consumed just 1.10 watts of power, which makes it 8 percent more power efficient than the Galaxy Note8.

The Galaxy Note9 will officially launch on August 24. To learn more about Samsung’s newest flagship phone and its record-setting display, check out Samsung Newsroom’s roundup of all things Galaxy Note9.
